The best time to visit the wildebeest Migration in Tanzania

    • July

This is when the wildebeest are in the northern Serengeti plains, and you have a chance of seeing up to thousands crossing the great Mara river. As a sight of a wildebeest crossing the so dramatic. It is considered by many the most desirable time to see the migration.

    • December – march

currently the wildebeest are in the southern area of the Serengeti , more specifically in Ndutu which is actually in the Ngorongoro conservation area, and it is calving season. Along the river crossings, this is the real highlight of the wildebeest journey and a fabulous time to see the herds congregate on the dramatic sweeping plains of the south, February is the only time of year when you are almost guaranteed to see the big herds all together as they always come south for calving season. Tanzania Private serengeti migration popular safari camping and lodges

    • The rest of the year

In November, April, May, and June, the migration is “in between” locations and as such these months are slightly transitional times to see the herds. November is the short rains, April and may are the long rains and as such the grass is green in these months across the Serengeti, so the wildebeest are more dispersed than in the prime-time July- October and December – March. Thus, they don’t get as many of those condensed big herds which people get excited about.

    More Information About Migration

The short rains begin around early November. A little after this, in late November and December, the herds of wildebeest migration arrive on the short grass plains of the Serengeti. These are south and east of Seronera, a round Ndutu and include the north of the Ngorongoro conservation area. Tanzania Private serengeti migration popular safari camping and lodges
Dispersed across these plains, wildebeest, and zebra are everywhere feeding on the fresh, nutritious grasses. They stay here through January, February and march, with most wildebeest calves born in a short window around February. Gradually they spread west across these plains, then around April they start their great migration north.Tanzania Private serengeti migration popular safari camping and lodges
By May the Serengeti’s wildebeest all seem to be moving north, migrating to seek fresh grazing and water. The area around Moru Kopjes and west of Seronera is then hectic with a series of moving columns, often containing hundreds of thousands of animals joined by many zebras, and a scattering of Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles. Some of the migration then head due north of Seronera, but most are usually further west. Around June the wildebeest migration is often halted on the south side of the Grumeti river, which has some channels which block or slow their migration north. The wildebeest then congregates there, in the Western Corridor, often building up to a high destiny before crossing the river. The river here is normally a series of pools and channels, but its not continuous and so whilst they always represent an annual feast for the Grumeti River’s large crocodiles, these aren’t usually quite as the crossing of the Mara river, further north.
The wildebeest migration continues moving northwards during July and August, often spreading out across a broad front: some heading through Grumeti Reserve and Ikorongo, others north Tanzania Private serengeti migration popular safari camping and lodges Tanzania Private serengeti migration popular safari camping and lodges
